Research Funding Opportunities

  • Research ListServs
    • Research Opportunities ListServ
      Used to distribute information about a broad range of opportunities to apply for research and fellowship funding from external sponsors, and to announce any internal funding opportunities such as the Faculty Initiatives Fund.
    • Limited Submissions ListServ
      Created to announce funding opportunities in which the sponsor limits the number of proposals that may be submitted by any institution. Such limited submission opportunities require the Office of Research to select proposals on behalf of Rice.
    • Research Information ListServ
      The purpose of this listserv is to assure that all Rice researchers are aware of and in compliance with certain sponsor requirements for the conduct of their research. This would include, but not be limited to, research using human subjects, research using laboratory animals, and research using recombinant DNA.
    • Sponsored Research (OSR) ListServ
      Established for research administration and used by OSR and Research Accounting to make announcements of meetings, inform you of changes in Rice and federal policies and procedures, and to communicate other information pertinent to research at Rice.

  • Behavioral Science Track Award for Rapid Transition
    The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) invites R03 research proposals for a Behavioral Science Track Award for Rapid Transition for small-scale, exploratory, or pilot research projects related to NIDA's behavioral sciences mission. The total amount awarded, amount of each individual award, and the number of awards will depend upon the quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. Eligibility is unrestricted domestically. Standard due dates apply.
  • Research and Technology Development to Support Crew Health and Performance in Space Exploration Missions
    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Research Announcement (NRA) NNJ09ZSA002N, entitled “Research and Technology Development to Support Crew Health and Performance in Space Exploration Missions,” jointly solicits ground-based, bed-rest definition and flight definition proposals for NASA and the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) in support of the Human Research Program. This NRA was released on July 31. Proposals solicited through this NRA will use a two-step proposal process. Only Principal Investigators submitting Step-1 proposals determined to be relevant to the solicited research of this NRA will be invited to submit full Step-2 proposals.

    Step-1 proposals are due on September 3, 2009, and invited Step-2 proposals are due on December 3, 2009. Participation is open to all categories of organizations, including educational institutions, industry, nonprofit organizations, NASA centers, and other Government agencies. Proposals must be submitted electronically via the NASA proposal data system, NSPIRES (http://nspires.nasaprs.com/).
  • Norman Hackerman Advanced Research Program
    The Norman Hackerman Advanced Research Program is a competitive peer-reviewed grant program created in 1987 by the 70th Texas Legislature. The purpose of the program is to encourage and provide support to faculty members and students in Texas institutions of higher education, both public and independent, to conduct basic research.
  • Fellowship Grants for Postdoctoral Research in Biology
    The Directorate for Biological Sciences announces fellowship grants for Postdoctoral Research in Biology to provide opportunities for scientists early in their careers who are ready to assume independence in their research efforts and to obtain training beyond their graduate education to prepare them for scientific careers, to gain research experience under the sponsorship of established scientists, and to broaden their scientific horizons. Up to 15 fellowships will be awarded per year in each competition area contingent upon availability of funds, with a pool of $6 million in FY10. Only individuals may apply. Applications are due Oct 14.
  • R36 Grant Applications for the Health Services Research Dissertation Program
  • The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) invites R36 grant applications for the Health Services Research Dissertation Program. This announcement represents the continuation of an AHRQ program that provides support to individuals who are conducting research undertaken as part of an academic program to qualify for a research doctorate degree. Research sponsored by the agency addresses issues of organization, delivery, financing, utilization, patient and provider behavior, outcomes, effectiveness, and cost. Eligibility is limited to domestic nonprofit organizations. Applications are due Nov 1.
  • NEH invites applications to the Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants Program
  • National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) The NEH invites applications to the Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants program. This program is designed to encourage innovations in the digital humanities and, by supporting the planning stages, NEH aims to encourage the development of innovative projects that promise to benefit the humanities. Awards are for up to 18 months with 2 levels of funding: Level I Grants range from $5,000 to $25,000 and; Level II Grants range from $25,001 to $50,000. Eligible entities include U.S. nonprofit organizations, state and local governmental agencies and Native American tribal organizations. Applications are due on or before Oct 6. .
  • DoD Orthopaedic Research Program
  • The Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program has released 5 solicitations to support research that will have a significant impact on the acute care of military combat-relevant orthopaedic injuries. Each opportunity has its own deadline and research priority areas.
  • Defense University Research Instrumentation Program
  • The Department of Defense invites proposals for the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program. DURIP is designed to improve the capabilities of U.S. institutions of higher education to conduct research and to educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense, by providing funds for the acquisition of research equipment. Approximately $40 million will be awarded for FY10 with individual award ceilings of $1 million. Eligibility is limited to accredited U.S. institutions of higher education with degree-granting programs in science, mathematics and/or engineering. Proposals are due Sep 15.
  • Dod - human, social and culture behavior modeling
  • The Office of Naval Research is making a broad agency announcement for proposals to develop a science base and associated technologies for human, social and culture behavior modeling. One or more awards will be available per area with a total amount of funding equal to $8 million spread over FY10-FY12. All responsible sources from academia and industry may submit proposals.
  • DoD spinal cord injury research program
    The DOD Spinal Cord Injury Research Program is seeking applicants for several award opportunities, each of which promotes innovative research into regenerating/repairing damaged spinal cords and improving rehabilitation for long-term care of wounded soldiers. Within each award, the program is seeking proposals that address neuro-protection and repair, rehabilitation and complications of chronic spinal cord injury and outcome measures including development and validation.
