BRIDGE Visiting Scholar Grant

The Bridge initiative (Building Research on Inequality and Diversity to Grow Equity) at Rice University seeks to further: 1) knowledge of the patterns, causes, consequences, and experience of inequality; 2) dialogue and action with respect to inequality within and beyond the university; and 3) the training of future scholars of inequality.

To promote and support engagement with external scholars, practitioners, and professionals that enrich ongoing or potential projects that contribute to the initiative’s vision, we invite applications from the Rice University community for funding to support visitors to Rice during the 2020-2021 academic year.

The requested visit or visits must occur in association with a specified workshop, seminar, research project, or other academic activity and must include a public lecture by the visitor that will form part of the BRIDGE speaker series. Visitors are obligated to spend their time at Rice consulting on, collaborating with, or conducting research-related work.

We encourage applications that supplement BRIDGE funds with support from other departments, programs, centers, or institutes, co-sponsorships, and applications made in association with BRIDGE Seed Grant applications and awards.

Awards are funded up to a maximum of:

  • $3,000 for a one-time visit.
  • $10,000 for research involving multiple visits.
  • $10,000 for multiple visitors for a day-long symposium.

Applicants may apply for more than one award.

Application Requirements

Applications must be written for an inter-disciplinary audience and:

  • Provide a description of the visit and outline its importance to academic activity related to BRIDGE's vision.
  • Describe the relevant qualifications of the visitor with respect to inequality.
  • Detail the perceived benefit of the visit for future collaborations and connections between Rice and other institutions.
  • Include a curriculum vitae of the applicant.
  • Include a curriculum vitae of the proposed visitor.
  • Provide a detailed budget and schedule, including any current or pending co-sponsorships and non-BRIDGE support associated with the visit.
  • Be no more than two pages (plus CVs) in length in .pdf format.

Visiting Scholar funds can be used to cover costs related to travel, accommodation, and related expenses (e.g. food and transportation), an honorarium (no greater than $1,000; amount determined by the applicant), and costs related to convening workshops or other activities related to the visit.
