The Biomaterials Lab hosted its 5th Annual Biofabrication Workshop on March 20th, and over twenty participants attended the in-person workshop. The Workshop covered exciting advancements in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine and various applications of 3D printing in health care.
Dr. Uday Jammalamadaka, Lab Manager, Biomaterials Lab, presented the opening talk introducing various applications of 3D printing including, different biofabrication techniques and strategies for fabrication of complex scaffolds for tissue engineering.
Dr. Jammalamadaka’s talk was followed by a presentation by Dr. Akhilesh Gaharwar, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M University. Dr. Gaharwar presented diverse research projects pioneered by his lab. Dr. Gaharwar presented his work on bio-instructive materials for in situ tissue regeneration, specifically new biomaterials for anatomical size scaffolds, and sustained, prolonged and on demand release of therapeutics.
Dr. Karthik Tappa, 3D Anatomical Specialist at MD Anderson Cancer Center presented his work on creating complex anatomical models for surgical planning and various challenges of 3D printing in clinical environments.
The workshop was concluded with demonstrations by Dr. Jammalamadaka on how to create complex models for 3D printing, advanced slicing methods for dual extrusion printing and lab tours. We are thankful for the guest speakers and the attendees who made this workshop a success.
