Engineering Teaching and Research Excellence Award

Proposal timeline for the 2016-2017 academic year:

  • Nominations are due January 25, 2016
  • Completed applications are due February 19, 2016

Fund information:

The purpose of this award is to recognize engineering faculty who demonstrate excellence in both teaching and research and to encourage all faculty towards excellence in the classroom and the lab. Impact to undergraduate and graduate students for both teaching and research will be examined.

Two awards will be given at the end of each academic year. Awards are $10,000: a $5,000 cash award goes directly to the faculty member; the remaining $5,000 is transferred to a D fund of the winner’s preference for use in enhancing teaching and research.

Eligibility:

All engineering faculty are eligible for this award, although it is expected that tenured and tenure-track faculty will comprise most of the nominations, given the equal balance on teaching and research.

Review process:

A committee, including faculty within the Dean’s office and other accomplished faculty, will evaluate applications. Research excellence will look at a number of aspects including papers in high impact journals, overall productivity as measured by number of students and post docs mentored, student awards, etc. Research excellence will be evaluated only for the previous two-year period.

Selection criteria:

Teaching excellence will look at a number of aspects including innovation, use of research-based practices, student evaluations, peer and administrator evaluations, etc. Teaching excellence will be evaluated during the previous two years and can be undergraduate, graduate, or both. Letters from former students and peers should be used to support research and teaching excellence.

How to apply:

The deadline for nominations is January 22, 2016. The deadline for completed applications is February 19, 2016.

  1. Anyone can nominate a School of Engineering faculty member, although only one nomination per person will be accepted
