About Rice STEM Summer Series

Register today for one of our free teacher webinars specifically designed for K–12 educators. These seminars are possible due to collaboration between R-STEM, the George R. Brown School of Engineering, and the Tapia Center for Excellence and Equity in Education.

Space is limited so registration is on first-come, first-served basis.

Low-Fidelity Prototyping

Dr. Matthew Wettergreen is an Associate Teaching Professor at the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen at Rice University. Dr. Wettergreen co-developed six of the seven engineering design courses in the design curriculum and currently instructs many of these courses, including first-year engineering design and Prototyping and Fabrication. This workshop will focus on using engineering in the K–12 classroom and low fidelity prototyping with everyday objects. Learn how to bring engineering into your classroom on a low cost budget.

Inclusive Teaching Strategies: UDL

As Associate Director for Science and Engineering at R-STEM, Christina Crawford leads workshops and teacher professional development programs by day and is earning her Ph.D. in Urban Education by night. In this workshop, she will share an overview of Universal Design for Learning and how the framework can allow for inclusion in online learning. Teachers will engage in an open dialogue regarding creating an equitable and inclusive online learning environment for all students.

Overcoming Resistance

Chris Lipp lectures on communication and empowerment in the George R. Brown School of Engineering. He is author of two books on persuasion, including Magnetic: How Great Leaders Persuade and Inspire. Chris will share with teachers proven techniques for overcoming resistance that can help with disengaged students, as well as challenging colleagues and administrators.
