Established in 2012, Rice’s Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) fosters outstanding teaching through evidence-based practices, strong community building, and research in pedagogical sciences. The CTE team is made up of faculty, staff, faculty fellows, and graduate fellows; the Faculty Fellows in particular play an integral role as the founding body of the CTE and as the anchor to the broader faculty community. The CTE hosts a variety of programs designed to support evidence-informed teaching and encourage innovative instructional methods, including the annual Symposium on Teaching and Learning and a bi-annual reading group focused on pedagogy and issues in higher education, among others. The Center also provides pedagogical training and curriculum for graduate and postdoctoral students, including the Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning; development and teaching fellowships; and a graduate student workshop series. Center faculty engage in a variety of collaborations at the individual, department, and university levels, such as pedagogy consultations, classroom observations, research in pedagogical sciences, teaching award nominations, and curriculum design.
