About the programs
Argonne National Laboratory supports graduate students in their pursuit of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers by providing educational and scientific opportunities throughout the graduate school experience.

Graduate Research Program — Appointments are available to qualified U.S. and non-U.S. university graduate students who wish to carry out their thesis research at Argonne National Laboratory under co-sponsorship of an Argonne staff member and a faculty member at the student’s home institution. This program provides Master’s and Ph.D. level candidates an opportunity to conduct work within an Argonne research group or on a specific project for the purpose of supporting the student’s thesis work.
Deadline: Application should be submitted at least one month prior to proposed start date.
Award period: 3 to 12 months. Appointments usually start when the student begins full-time thesis research at Argonne after having completed all other academic requirements.
Award amount: Hourly wage and travel reimbursement.

Visiting Student Program for Graduate Students — Appointments are provided to graduate students for the sole purpose of collaboration and use of laboratory resources to benefit the student’s thesis research and not for the benefit of Argonne. Participants will be provided with a gate pass and may visit Argonne whenever appropriate.

Award period: Up to 1 year.
Award amount: Travel expenses, lodging and/or some per diem for performing research away from a home institution may be reimbursed up to one year if the participant attends school more than 50 miles away.
