About the fellowship

This program is currently on hiatus.

This fellowship is intended for graduate students at U.S. universities who are in the research phase of graduate study in theoretical particle physics or theoretical astrophysics. These departments offer strong and exciting research opportunities in collider physics, neutrino physics, perturbative QCD, lattice gauge theory, model building, astrophysics, and cosmology. The research environment at Fermilab, while theoretically rigorous, is nourished by close connections with the laboratory’s experimental programs.  Graduate students in the Graduate Student Research Program will remain matriculated at their home universities but be in residence at Fermilab.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, or, if you are a citizen of another nation, have a valid visa.
  • Be a Ph.D. student at a U.S. university in the research phase of graduate study in theoretical particle physics or theoretical astrophysics.

Award amount

$30,000, supplemented by a move allowance of up to $4,000 (to cover the move to/from Fermilab), an allowance of up to $3,000 for health insurance, if needed, and an allowance for conference travel.  The program also aims to pay the student’s tuition, but has a fixed budget, so tuition remission is limited to a maximum of $6000 (for the full year).

Award period

One (1) year.

Application deadline
